How to build and manage a product roadmap?

Average product managers have a 9 months roadmap.

The shorter term roadmap is more fixed with specific plans, the longer term can be reprioritised and can change flexibly.

It is important not to change the short term roadmap in order to be more efficient.

Some tools to plan the product:

  • Researching the users and team and work out what the needs are
    – Define the pain point
  • Setting the product vision – what do we want to build as the end goal (there is no end goal, it is always changing and evolving with the market)
  • RICE Scoring: https://www.intercom.com/blog/rice-simple-prioritization-for-product-managers/
This is a good way to compare notes between what you want to build, and what impact it will make, and how much effort it would take to create and therefore what to prioritise.
  • Set up some OKRs https://www.whatmatters.com/faqs/okr-meaning-definition-example/
  • Create the roadmap in Trello or spreadsheet like below

Some other examples of roadmaps are here.
