We have been creating a video in Shandong University by filming international students. We took a bus, a load of students, and visited many different parts of the university over 3 days.
Shandong University is the second oldest university in China after Peking university, and has 8 campuses in Jinan, Weihai and Qingdao. While the university has over 60,000 students making it one of China’s biggest universities, it is one of the most competitive universities in China to get into. Only 1% of the top students in Shandong Province can go to this university.
Shandong University is also selected as one of China’s 42 double first class universities which means the university is receiving significant funding to become a world class university.
In Qingdao, Shandong university is creating a completely new campus which will hold over 50,000 students. I was particularly interested in the Biotech laboratory in Qingdao which is one of China’s key laboratories. There are some fascinating things going on here in genetic engineering. We interviewed students who were running experiments editing genes in fungus, and bacteria.
Unlike many universities, this university has a lot of amazing museums and libraries. This is because when it was originally founded, as the second university to be founded in China, having museums and libraries was very important for the founders, and that is why they place a prominent position on campus today.
