4 things I learnt this week

Be yourself

An idea I got from The pumpkin plan. There are thousands of pumpkins, which one do you choose? You optimise for something – bigger, more colourful, better shape. There are many pumpkins that look the same and they go unnoticed. There is real value in being different, unique, yourself. Sometimes it’s smart to listen to others but sometimes it’s necessary to fight pressure to fit in. In the case of a business, you need to be different in the market in some way.

Be fearless

50th law is a good book. 50 cent’s advantage is apparently being fearless when all around are scared or anxious. Sometimes we need to do things that make us feel fear or anxiety. That can often be a sign of what we need to do to grow. That can be a superpower.

The power of writing

One of the reasons that Winston Churchill was such a great speaker and communicator was that he was a writer. He read and wrote over 15 million words, which is more than Shakespeare and Dickens combined. Writing helped organise and clarify your thoughts, and learn. How did he write so much?
– He had two, intense work shifts a day with a strict schedule
– He had hobbies
Other reasons here.

Learn from Great People

I am finding a lot of what I’m learning from biographies. I listen to them on Founders Podcast, and then read the interesting ones myself. I find that reading them is much better than the podcast because there is so much more depth and things to learn from biographies that you can’t get from someone’s summary of what they learnt.
