How can hairdressers improve?

an Aha moment is the exact point in time when a user understands the value they get from a product or service. This means they understand the value the product will provide to them as a customer and then in turn usually results in a commitment from them to said product.

When you get a haircut the aha moment is the moment after you’ve had it done and you have a new haircut. You feel clean, new, fresh, and smarter. A trendy new hairstyle can lift your spirits and make you feel better emotionally. You feel smarter and different.

That can be an amazing experience, or it can just be a bit underwhelming or disappointing.

How can you make it amazing? Great hairdressers will focus on that experience and try to make it as good as possible. Making sure that it’s what you want, that it makes you look great.

How can you enhance the aha moment?

Some ideas are – giving them complements about their appearance. Can you give them some extra after shave or perfume to enhance that feeling? Can you make sure the lighting and mirror in the hairdressers are great? When they walk out too, they can see themselves. Maybe you can give them a photo of themselves that they can share? or they can also get their passport photos done too. A partnership and discount with a professional photo studio nearby can be a great win-win and help enhance that feeling of having a makeover.

Repeat Orders

If I was a hairdresser I would really make a big emphasis on trying to make people come back within a regular period of time. How often should I get a haircut? When should I come back? I must have had hundreds of haircuts but nobody has ever told me about this.

It grows at 1/2 an inch per month, so how often you go depends on how long you want to keep it.

  • Very short hair: Every 1-3 weeks
  • Short hair: Every 2-7 weeks
  • Medium hair: Every 2-3 months
  • Long hair: Every 3-4 months

I would suggest that hairdressers bring up this topic, and sets up a reminder for each person with a 20% discount if the customer books back within X period of times. It could go something like this:

Hairdresser – I suggest that based on your hair-length, you come back within 6 weeks. If you book within 4 weeks, we can give you a 30% discount and within 6 weeks we can give you a 10% discount. Which day do you normally prefer to come? Would you like me to set up a reminder? OK, so enter your details here and we will send you the reminder on the system.

Hairdressers going Digital

Getting a haircut is an underwhelming experience compared to how good it can be. Going in to a place, sitting down, and then having the conversation about how you would like it to be cut. Trying to explain it. OK it’s quite simple, just cut my hair.

But how can it be better?

How about personalising it using digital technology?

How about creating a hair digital ID? With some database about your hair and how it works. They can set up a time to give you a hair analysis. How different is someone’s hair? Colour, texture, health, etc., what does your hair say about your health? How is my hair changing over time?

Educate me about my hair and how it works, and monitor and manage it over time.
