If you only touched the trunk, you might think it was a tree
If you only touched the tail, you might think it was a rope
If you only touched the tusk, you might think it was a spear
etc.,

Make an overall judgment of something on the basis of one-sided viewpoint; take a part for the whole; a blind man feels an elephant, only touching some part of it, and concluding what the elephant is like.
